Hillside Habitat Management – Alva Glen

The volunteer group have been involved in woodland management tasks in Alva Glen. The primary goal behind this task was to remove overbearing tree saplings and gorse from the hillsides to prevent competition with the declining rock rose wildflower an important food source for the decline in the Northern Brown Argus Butterfly.

The volunteers enjoyed learning the ecological purposes behind this task. They also loved the physical nature of the task – scrambling up the hillside and seeing the amazing views across Clackmannanshire from atop the glen. In total, the volunteers removed 60m² of scrub. The volunteers also removed 30m² of invasive laurel from the area surrounding the glen car park.
